Saw this in the news feed on google. I know its illegal but I don’t give a fuck, you are going to take the time to go through the trash you deserve the cash or what ever you find. I also instantly thought of TPB.
What is your opinion on people going through your trash?

Once I throw something out I consider it gone. If people want to go through it fine by me as long as they don’t make a mess.

Does this work with cars, too? If someone parks it on the curb, it is garbage that I can take? Canada must be a magical wonderland.

I’m not a fan of the people that stalk through neighborhoods to take scrap metal out of the trash.
It’s one thing to take a hunk of mangled metal at the curb, but if you open my trash can lid I’m coming outside pissed. Too much identity theft stuff happens for people to be rifling through trash. Yeah I know blah blah get a shredder blah blah, stay out of my damn trash can.

I wish, it is a $10,000 fine in Ottawa if you get caught. Probably in Dartmouth (where trailer park boys was in that season) too, Ricky is just a dumbass.

Whenever my bin starts getting full, I go empty the cat box in the bag and toss it out. No one touches my stuff.

I once came home from nightshift at 6:30am to find a drunk and possibly high woman rifling through mine and the neighbours rubbish. I thought about confronting her and knowing women where I live thought better of it. I called the police and 50 minutes later a police car came round and drove right by her so I went out and told her to put everything back where it was and tidy it up and leave. She was that wasted I stood over her for the next half hour watching her put everything back.
I presently pay a few pounds a months for a company to collect my paper waste with any confidential information on. They pick it up from my door and sign for it, then send me a confirmation to say it has been destroyed correctly.

I really appreciate the sketchy-ass dudes in rusty Dodge Rams that come and take the useless scrap I put on the curb. The regular garbage collectors sure as hell aren’t going to take a pair of bent motorcycle forks or a rusty steel bumper.
I could take it to the scrapper myself but I just don’t want to bother and I don’t have a truck. I have no problem with people taking useful things out of my garbage, as long as they’re not just ripping bags open and making a mess. If they’re strewing shit all over my property, then I have a problem. Fortunately, I guess the scrappers in my area tend to be polite ‘cause I’ve never had that problem.

That’s crazy, I only really see this one Asian gentleman looking for cans and other scrap metal, and he never leaves a mess. I didnt even think about the drunk high people making a mess and shit.
I just burn my “evidence” as I like to call it, or bring it to work and toss it in one of their sensitive info disposal bins.

Not cool with it, for multiple reasons. First of all it would require me to allow strangers on my property. Second of all, there can be and often is sensitive information in people’s trash.
However, if it was just someone collecting cans to turn in when my bins are at the curb (night before pickup), I would not bother him/her.

New York has been trying to crack down on scavengers as well. Obviously lost revenue is the largest concern, but they were spouting some nonsense about not being able to measure how much they were recycling to meet city guidelines.
They did raise possibly real complaints about people making a mess by grabbing the valuable and scattering the trash, and about commercialized scavenging gangs, as opposed to some homeless guy trying to secure the 5 cent deposit.

I was living with a friend in a not so nice area of the city.
It’s only £7 ($10) for a sack and it’s fully legally compliant with to U.K. requirements on destruction of confidential information.

I didn’t think this was a growing problem, people used to make a job out of it, and it was just expected in any large city that somebody would be digging through your trash.

As long as they don’t make s mess, then it’s fine with me. The scrapers around here are pretty good about that.

I’m in Michigan so we keep all soda and beer cans and bottles to bring back to get out 10 cent deposit back from the store.

Yikes. There’s signs all over that say if it wasn’t bought in Michigan it’s against the law to return it here. The barcodes are pretty smart too. They’ll catch ya and it won’t be accepted.

Rifling through my trash - as in opening up the can and sorting around in there, no. But, if there’s any big, loose objects at the curb, have at them.

When I toss it, I consider it gone. If someone else has a use for it, all the better. Anything with my identity on it I burn, so as long as no messes are made, I’ve got no issue with it. In college we had a guy dumpster dive in the fraternities dumpsters digging out cans and such, around 3:30-4:30 am. Heard him rummaging around one night and went to confront him because we’d been having trouble with theft and cars being broken into at the time but he was a nice guy. Talked to him a few more times afterwards, sometimes even left the cans out on the picnic table for him so he didn’t have to claw through the dumpster.

I put out an old electric hot water heater and ended up helping the dude put it into his banged up F150.
Yes I know there is lots of money in scrap value there but I didn’t own a pickup, none of my friends did and this thing was leaking some nasty corroded water out of it.
Oh and the nearest recycler is 15 miles away only open once a month.
